Frizzy hair is definitely not much fun  However, what most people with the curse of the frizz don’t realise is that it can be easy to fix! Let us help you get to the root cause and some easy solutions to calm the frizz and regain a calm and lustrous mane.

A lack of lipids are what can be blamed for frizzy, dry & brittle hair. Lipids are oils created by our own body and the lipids produced in the hair follicle are an essential part of healthy hair. These lipids perform many tasks including preventing moisture loss from the hair shaft, providing lubrication, smoothing the hair cuticle to prevent knotting and creating a smooth and shiny hair fibre.  When hair is depleted of these natural oils it becomes dry, dull, breaks easily, curls cannot form and hair is generally frizzy.

There are two primary influential factors when it comes to fighting the frizz:

Internal Factors

The beautifully intelligent ‘design’ of hair has it passing the sebaceous glands as it exits the hair follicle and scalp. This allows it to receive a beautiful coating of natural oils that gift smooth, shiny and manageable hair. Curly and wavy hair is disadvantaged in this way in that the non-linear nature of curls means that they often spiral around and away from these glands, thus missing out on this glorious elixir of healthy hair. The ageing process can also decrease lipid production and stores in the glands and hair follicles, also resulting in dry, brittle and frizzy hair.

External Factors

Daily hairstyling habits like colouring, blow drying, ironing, hot tools  can all lead to rapid moisture and lipid loss. Another key external factor that will contribute to frizzy hair is low-quality and chemical based shampoo’s that contain aggressive sulfates, alcohols and foaming agents that strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils.

Tips to tame the frizz

Don’t wash too often! The ideal frequency for most hair types is once or twice a week.

Wash with a gentle & natural shampoo formula that doesn’t strip your hair and scalp of its natural sebum like the Pure Harmony Hairbath.

Follow with a conditioner that is jam-packed with lipids: the Sans [ceuticals] Nourishing Hair Hydratant Ultra+ is formulated with four times the essential ingredients for hair than most conventional conditioners. Restoring lipids and moisture back into the hair fibre.

Finally, the secret to the secret sauce …. finish by layering 15-20 pumps of a pH corrector to the hair over the conditioner. This works to lock in essential lipids and moisture into the hair fibre by flattening the hair cuticle that has been lifted by daily styling and poor-quality shampoo’s. Closing the hair cuticle around the conditioner results in smooth, frizz-free hair fibre that is soft, shiny & manageable. If you have curly hair the Quiet Calm Curl Control will also do the trick for you.

Insider tips & tricks

+ Don’t rake, comb or touch curly/frizzy hair when it is wet. This will only exacerbate the frizz.

+ Comb only when wet and layered with conditioner.

+ Gently scrunch or blot with an old t-shirt or bamboo towel to remove moisture. Avoid using a towel as this will remove too much moisture.

+ Avoid leaving the house with wet hair. The wind & elements will only disrupt your beautiful calm mane.

+ Washing hair in the evening and sleeping with it spread out across the pillow allows it to take form. It can then be gently released and shaken into shape with once dry in the morning, revealing a frizz-free do.
