Wrap with care: Sustainable gift wrapping for the winter season

Ah, the joy of holiday gifting, the process gives you just a warm feeling, from picking out the perfect item to seeing the delighted look on a loved one’s face as they unwrap it. But here’s a thought: what if the wrapping was just as thoughtful as the gift inside? Traditional wrapping paper is often tossed away and, more often than not, can’t even be recycled due to dyes, foils, or glitter. Let’s turn this around and make our gift wrapping as caring as our gift-giving by going sustainable.

Here’s how to create an eco-friendly (and beautiful!) presentation that’s gentle on the planet and a delight to unwrap.

1. Check what you already have

Think about materials you have at home; newspapers, old magazines, and even spare fabric can make amazing (and unique!) gift wraps. Just imagine a neatly wrapped book in crisp newspaper, tied with a rustic twine bow, timeless and charming, right?

Another option? Fabric wraps! Have any scarves you no longer use or a cotton cloth you can cut into squares? These can make your gifts feel extra cozy and even give recipients an added little “gift” to reuse. You can try the traditional Japanese art of furoshiki (wrapping with fabric) which has been around for centuries and is easy to pick up.

+Try this: Look through your closet and check for any unwanted cotton or linen items you can reuse. These add a warm, homey touch and make for a wonderful zero-waste solution.

2. Add a natural touch with eco-friendly accents

Instead of reaching for the usual plastic bows, try decorating with natural touches like sprigs of rosemary, pinecones, or dried orange slices. Not only are these beautiful, but they’re also biodegradable and leave a much lighter footprint. And don’t worry, they’re easier to find than you might think!

+If you’re putting together a beauty gift, try pairing it with something that lasts, like a Quartz Sculpt & Lift Face Stone from Ere Perez. It’s practical, it’s pretty, and it’s reusable, a gift that keeps on giving ;)

3. Rethink your wrapping tools

There’s a whole world beyond plastic tape. For example, you can use compostable tape, or, even better, tie your gifts with natural twine or raffia. These natural ties are completely biodegradable, easy to find, and add a gorgeous rustic look.

+Nourished recommends: Our Mist Spray - Fragonia & Sandalwood makes a thoughtful small addition if you want to gift your friends a sense of calm while they unwrap their gift. Just a spritz can leave a lasting impression, not just on the package but in their home as well.

4. Gift bags with a purpose

Reusable gift bags are always a win. Look for bags made from recycled materials, or, if you’re feeling crafty, try sewing a few bags yourself! This can turn into a thoughtful keepsake that recipients can use again and again.

+Or, go for a double-duty approach: wrap your gift in a reusable tote bag that they can take shopping. Our Nourished range of Body Care products, like the Daily Deo Chai Spice, can easily fit into a small cotton tote, giving them something to use long after the holiday season has passed.

5. DIY wrapping paper (that can be recycled!)

If you prefer traditional paper wrapping, opt for plain kraft paper or recyclable wrapping paper without any plastic coating. You can personalize it with stamps, doodles, or even add some pressed leaves for a natural touch.

+And a fun idea? Wrap your gift in plain paper, then decorate with a natural ink stamp, bonus points if you let the kids help out!
