Chemical vs. Natural Sunscreen

Chemical vs. Natural Sunscreen

Let's dive into one of the hottest debates under the sun: chemical vs. natural sunscreen. We get it, choosing the right sunscreen can feel like a science experiment. What's the best kind of sunscreen to have? What's the actual difference? There's so much info out there, and sometimes it's hard to know what's fact and what's fiction. That's why we're here to help clear things up and help you make a sun-safe choice.

Our goal is to help you choose a sunscreen that's not only safe for your skin but also better for the planet.

Does natural sunscreen actually work?

There are many misconceptions about natural sunscreen. Some think "natural sunscreen doesn't work." Spoiler: it definitely does! With minerals like (non-nano) zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, natural sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection by physically blocking UV rays. Like tiny mirrors on your skin, they reflect UV rays away from your skin. So, why the doubt? Here’s why:

Texture and Appearance
Most natural sunscreen can leave a white cast, especially on darker skin tones, which might make you less likely to use them. This happens because the minerals that protect against UV rays act like tiny mirrors on your skin. While this may not look as nice, it's actually better for your skin. Many people don't know that chemical filters can be absorbed by your skin and potentially cause irritation.

Immediate Protection
Chemical sunscreens contain ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate, which absorb UV rays and chemically convert them into heat, which is then released by the skin. This chemical process takes about 20 minutes, and only after that time is the sunscreen effective. In contrast, natural sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, usually contain active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Since these ingredients sit on top of the skin, they provide immediate protection after application. No waiting required! Ideal, we think. ;)

Spreadability
Natural sunscreens can be thicker in consistency and therefore harder to spread. Because natural, mineral sunscreens haven't been popular for very long, this was indeed the case with most sunscreens initially. However, a few years later, new formulas are much smoother and easier to spread. For example, with our own brand Nourished Daily, we've spend over two years developing and reformulating our sunscreen lotion. As a result, our Daily Face + Body Sunscreen Lotion SPF50 is now easier to apply.

Make the switch to natural SPF

Natural sunscreens have some fantastic benefits that make them worth considering, let's have a look at the most important benefits.

+ Gentle on Skin
Ideal for sensitive skin and those prone to allergies, eczema, or psoriasis. Without harsh chemicals, there's a significantly reduced risk of irritation of the skin, making them a soothing choice for delicate skin types.

+ Eco-Friendly
Many natural sunscreens are reef-safe and biodegradable, meaning they're kind to our oceans and marine life. Conventional sunscreens, on the other hand, can release small particles into the ocean when you swim, leading to coral bleaching and damage to coral reefs. Coral reefs are crucial ecosystems that provide a home and protection for fish and other sea creatures. By choosing reef-safe sunscreens, you help keep these important underwater habitats healthy and support the overall health of our planet.

+ Immediate Protection
With natural sunscreens, there's no waiting time, you're protected as soon as you apply it. Unlike chemical sunscreens that require about 20 minutes to activate, natural options start working immediately, giving you peace of mind and instant coverage.
