Blackheads or Clogged Pores: What’s the Difference?

Blackheads, clogged pores, Nourished

We’ve all been there standing in front of the mirror, noticing tiny dots or enlarged pores on our face, wondering what they actually are. Are they blackheads? Are they just clogged pores? And most importantly: how do we deal with them? Let’s break it down.

Our skin is covered with tiny openings called pores. Through these pores, sweat and sebum (our skin’s natural oil) are released. This process is essential: it regulates body temperature, protects the skin from pathogens and dehydration, and helps remove harmful substances.

But there’s a catch the same sebum, together with dead skin cells and dirt, can sometimes get trapped inside these pores. When that happens, they become clogged, which can eventually lead to blackheads or other blemishes. Here the differences 👇

What are clogged pores?

Clogged pores occur when oil and dead skin cells build up inside the pore. They often look like small bumps or give the skin a rough texture. They’re not always dark sometimes they’re skin-colored and less noticeable, but they can still make the skin feel uneven.

What Are Blackheads?

Blackheads are actually a specific type of clogged pore. The difference? When the pore stays open and the trapped material is exposed to air, it oxidizes and turns dark. That’s why blackheads look like tiny black dots, most commonly on the nose, chin, and forehead.

The Key Difference

+ Clogged pores = blocked openings, may look bumpy or uneven, not necessarily dark.

+ Blackheads = clogged pores that have oxidized, turning into visible black spots.

How to treat and prevent them?

The good news: clogged pores and blackheads can both be managed with the right skincare routine. Here are some effective options:

+ Consistent cleansing & lightweight products keep your skin clear without overwhelming it.

+ Exfoliation helps loosen dead skin cells and unclog pores. Here we recommend the Ipsum Skin Enzyme MicroPolish.

+ Healing clay masks absorb excess oil and remove toxins.
